Bryan, William Jennings
Брайан, Уильям (1860—1925), политический деятель. Трижды выступал кандидатом от Дем. партии на президентских выборах, заявляя, что он представляет интересы простых американцев, но терпел поражение, хотя и набирал значительное число голосов на Юге и Западе. На съезде Дем. партии в 1896 произнёс знаменитую «Речь о золотом кресте» [‘Cross of Gold speech'], в которой призывал к неограниченному выпуску денег из серебра и выступал против золотого стандарта [Gold Standard]. Будучи фундаменталистом в религии, Брайан выступал против преподавания теории эволюции в школах и участвовал как обвинитель на процессе по делу Скоупса [*Scopes trial], известном как «обезьяний процесс» [‘monkey trial'], в штате Теннесси в 1925
